We do not currently grow fruits, except melons. We have plans in the next 18 months of beginning an orchard (apple, plum, nectarine, peach, maybe pears) and rasp- and blackberries. Strawberries are another possibility that I’d like to pursue. I’ll keep you updated. We will probably start with a few apple trees this spring.
One of the primary problems with apples in southern Indiana is disease. Specifically, we have a large number of eastern red cedars on and around the property, which serves as a host for cedar apple rust. As a result, varieties must be chosen that are resistant to this disease particularly. This is a topic that requires research, since it would be a shame to spend $30 apiece on 50 trees and find out we can’t get any fruit…
